Shannon McKinney is a retired teacher, poet, and novelist from southern Indiana. She has been included in Who’s Who Among American Teachers and Who’s Who in America. Her articles have been published in Country and Country Extra magazines, Women’s World, and Nostalgia. McKinney has also been published in poetry anthologies. One of the poems from her latest poetry book, Blackberry Jam, received honorable mention in the 2002 Rising Sun Fund Poetry Competition. Blackberry Jam is a collection of fifty, illustrated, children’s poems about the magical, the imaginary, and the real. The book contains colorful illustrations by the author. Blackberry Jam and McKinney’s novel, Fences, are published by AuthorHouse. In Fences, McKinney uses images and events from the past to explore the ugly face of racism, the toll it takes on the father who practices it, the son who rebels, and all who are caught in the middle. It depicts a turbulent time in the history of school integration and explores the stereotypes of racial discrimination and the difficulties involved with an interracial relationship. In her first poetry book, Apple Skins, published by SterlingHouse, McKinney, a thirty-six year veteran of the classroom, profiles such classic classroom characters as the class clown, the space cadet, and the athlete. This illustrated collection is popular with teen and teachers.
